SImbo Island Clinic

Simbo Island Clinic

Our RAWCS team, consisting of 2 Rotarians from Rotary Club of Jindalee, 1 Rotarian from Rotary Club of Beenleigh and 3 Rotary volunteers, visited Simbo Island in the Solomon Islands and constructed a 6 room medical clinic.

We constructed the building to the stage where the outer cladding was completed and the building was secure. A second RAWCS group will line and ceil the building and construct an ablution block a tank stand and complete the plumbing.

The clinic, staffed by a registered nurse with mid-wifery experience, will service some 2000 villagers on Simbo Island. Our local co-ordinator, Mr Philip Koinou, is very keen to get the clinic operating: “I will not have to paddle the in-labour women 3km up the island now – I have had to deliver 4 babies in the canoe in the past” he told us.

All the materials, including the timber, roofing iron, steel posts and coral sand for the concrete had to be carried up a very steep track from the landing stage, a mighty task for the local people.

The project will be hugely beneficial to the villagers on Simbo Island. We were hugely impressed with the way the villagers made us welcome. The women cooked for us and the men assisted in the construction of the building....... and turtle meat is very delicious!
